Description
This is a single Marlin Model 1898 slide action shotgun chambered in 12 gauge, featuring a 30 inch barrel and an exposed hammer design. The shotgun is configured with a straight-grip walnut buttstock and a grooved wooden pump forend. Key markings include the barrel address Marlin Fire-Arms Co., New-Haven, Ct. U.S.A. and patent dates Patd Nov. 6. 1894. May 12. 1896. and June 2. 1896. The breech end of the barrel is stamped 12 Ga. The full serial number 70953 is stamped on the underside of the receiver, while the magazine tube bears the mismatched number 71699 H. The metal surfaces have a cleaned to white appearance with scattered dark spots and areas of light surface pitting. The firearm is equipped with a single brass bead front sight and a black hard rubber buttplate featuring the script Marlin logo. We have not function-tested this firearm. Condition report:
The metal surfaces have been cleaned to a bright, silver-white appearance, removing the original finish and exposing scattered dark oxidation spots and fine surface pitting throughout the receiver, barrel, and magazine tube. The bore shows wear and light pitting consistent with age. The slide action and exposed hammer appear to cycle and function correctly, though mechanical reliability is not guaranteed. The walnut stock and forend show significant handling wear including numerous scratches, dings, and surface impressions, but remain free of major cracks. The hard rubber buttplate shows moderate wear to the checkering and script logo.
