Description
This Wards Western Field Model 87-SB87-TA is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for .22 caliber ammunition, specifically engineered to function as a self-loader with .22 Long Rifle cartridges while capable of manual operation with short and long variants. The firearm features a blowback-operated action housed in a receiver distinguished by characteristic horizontal cooling slots, often referred to as gills, on the left side. It is equipped with an under-barrel tubular magazine and a one-piece wood stock featuring a black-painted forend tip and a ribbed black synthetic buttplate. The sighting arrangement consists of a fixed blade front sight and a buckhorn-style adjustable rear sight. Prominent markings on the barrel include WARD’S WESTERN FIELD and MODEL 87-SB87-TA, along with caliber designations specifying .22 SHORT, LONG OR LONG RIFLE and LONG RIFLE ONLY AS AUTOMATIC. The barrel also lists several patent numbers: 2094577, 2224758, 2223093, RE.22585, and 2271576. This model is a store-branded variant of the Savage Stevens Model 87A design. Condition report:
The metal surfaces retain a portion of their original blued finish with significant thinning and wear throughout the barrel and receiver. There is evidence of surface oxidation, light freckling, and scattered patches of minor pitting consistent with age. The wood stock is sound and displays typical handling marks, shallow dings, and surface scratches. The black paint on the forend tip shows scuffing and finish loss. The bore is relatively bright with defined rifling. The action appears to function correctly when manually cycled; however, we have not function-tested this firearm.
