Description
This is a single bolt-action rifle, a sporterized British Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 Mk III chambered in .303 British. The rifle features a standard-length barrel fitted with its original tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards and a protected front blade sight. The action is the classic Lee-Enfield rear-locking bolt system, known for its fast cyclic rate, and includes a detachable ten-round box magazine. The receiver and barrel exhibit a blued finish that shows age-related thinning and wear. The two-piece walnut stock has been modified into a sporter configuration by shortening the forend and removing the upper handguards. Key markings include the right side of the wrist socket stamped with a crown over the letters G R followed by ENFIELD 1916 and the model designation SHT L.E. / III. The receiver ring is stamped ENGLAND and bears the serial number 5248 which is repeated on the barrel shank. Further barrel markings specify .303 2.22 and 18.5 TONS alongside various British proof and inspection marks including a crown over GR and crossed lances. The rifle is completed with a brass buttplate featuring a hinged trapdoor for a cleaning kit. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces retain a moderate amount of original blued finish with significant thinning on the high edges, receiver, and bolt handle. Areas of light surface oxidation and minor peppering are visible on the receiver and barrel shank. The sporterized walnut stock is in good overall condition, exhibiting numerous small nicks, dings, and scratches consistent with service and subsequent field use; some fibrous debris is adhered to the wood surface. The bore condition has not been inspected. The bolt action appears to cycle smoothly and the trigger functions, though the firearm has not been function-tested or test-fired. The magazine is present and shows wear consistent with the rest of the rifle.
