Description
The J.C. Higgins Model 103.228 is a bolt-action rimfire rifle chambered for .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle cartridges, manufactured for Sears, Roebuck & Company as a variant of the Marlin Model 80. The firearm features a tapered barrel with a blued finish and a receiver grooved for optic mounting. It is mounted in a one-piece hardwood stock with a walnut finish, featuring a semi-pistol grip, a straight comb, and a black textured buttplate. The rifle is equipped with original factory open sights, including a rear elevator sight and a front blade, and is further fitted with a J.C. Higgins Rifleman 4X scope featuring a gold-toned turret housing and fine crosshair reticle. This lot includes one detachable box magazine. Key markings transcribed from the barrel include J.C. HIGGINS – MODEL 103.228 – 22 CAL and SEARS, ROEBUCK & COMPANY – S-L-LR. The scope is marked J.C. HIGGINS RIFLEMAN 4X USA. No serial number is visible on the exterior of the firearm. Condition report:
The metal components exhibit a thinning blued finish with scattered light surface oxidation and freckling throughout the barrel and receiver. The bolt handle shows finish wear consistent with operation. The hardwood stock displays numerous scratches, dings, and areas of finish wear from handling and field use. A small chip is noted at the heel of the black plastic buttplate. The action appears to function correctly, though it has not been function-tested or test-fired. The bore was not inspected. The mounted scope shows light external wear, while the glass appears clear and the reticle remains intact.
