Description
This J.C. Higgins Model 583.23 is a bolt-action shotgun chambered in 12 gauge for 2 3/4-inch shells. Distributed by Sears, Roebuck and Co., the firearm features a 27-inch blued steel barrel equipped with an adjustable muzzle choke device featuring markings for Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder patterns. It is fitted with an internal tubular magazine and mounted in a smooth one-piece wood stock with a semi-pistol grip. Key markings include the barrel inscription J.C. HIGGINS – MODEL 583.23 SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. along with PROOF TESTED-12 GA. 2 3/4″ CHAMBER. The barrel also bears an EA mark near the receiver. The receiver is equipped with a sliding safety marked with an arrow and S. The buttstock is finished with a red rubber recoil pad embossed with the J.C. Higgins signature. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The shotgun is in good used condition. The blued steel finish shows thinning and wear consistent with use, particularly on the bolt, receiver, and at the muzzle. The bore is bright. The wooden stock has various light scratches, dings, and handling marks throughout but remains structurally sound. The action appears to function correctly, though the firearm has not been function-tested or live-fired. The red rubber recoil pad remains intact with some age-related wear.
