Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 1596:
Sold for: $1,000
Description
A Civil War Era Smith’s Patent Cavalry Carbine, manufactured by Mass Arms Co. This antique percussion-fired, breech-loading long gun features a hammer ignition system and a distinctive tilting breech-block action, characteristic of mid-19th century firearms. It is constructed with a dark-stained wooden stock and steel components, with the trigger and trigger guard appearing to be brass or bronze. Visible markings on the left side of the receiver read “MANUFACTURED BY MASS ARMS CO CHICOPEE FALLS”, while the right side displays “ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE BALTIMORE U.S.A. SMITH’S PATENT JUNE 23. 1857”. Additional numerical markings “1793” and “29267” are visible on the underside of the receiver. This model is commonly associated with a .50 caliber bore.
Condition report:
The carbine is in antique condition, consistent with significant age and use. The wood stock shows considerable wear, numerous dings, and scratches. The metal components exhibit a heavily patinated, oxidized finish with areas of surface rust and pitting.
