Description

A United Spanish War Veterans Numbered Commemorative Medal, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The medal is constructed from a patinated bronze or copper alloy and a fabric ribbon. The top element features a spread-winged eagle with a shield on its chest, surmounting a laurel wreath, with a pin-back closure on the reverse. Suspended from this is a US flag ribbon, showing approximately 33 stars and red and white stripes. Below the ribbon is an intermediate metal bar depicting crossed rifles and a cannon, with a central scroll inscribed “UNITED” on the front and the engraved number “66384” on the reverse. Hanging from this bar is a Maltese-style cross medal. The front of the cross bears inscriptions on its arms: “CUBA” (top), “PHILIPPINE ISLANDS” (left), “PORTO RICO” (right), and “USA” (bottom), with a central circular medallion depicting two standing soldiers and a kneeling figure, flanked by the dates “1898-1902” and an outer ring reading “SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR VETERANS.” The reverse of the cross’s central medallion is inscribed “UNITED” surrounded by stars and symbols, with compass points “N,” “S,” “E,” “W” on the arms.

Condition report:

The item exhibits significant age and wear, including heavy oxidation and verdigris on the metal components. The fabric ribbon is notably discolored, faded, and frayed.
