Gun Collectors Dream Auction #81 January 31st & Feb 1st
Lot 554:
Sold for: $160
Description
This is a single vintage leather rifle scabbard or saddle boot designed for the transport of a long gun, likely a rifle or carbine. The scabbard is constructed of heavy, dark reddish-brown leather, featuring robust stitching along the edges, indicative of quality field gear. The design includes several adjustable leather securing straps accompanied by silver-tone metal buckles and D-rings, intended for attachment to a saddle or pack animal. A notable feature is the distinct, dark outline engraving, depicting a stylized animal figure (possibly a dog or wolf), prominently visible on the butt end of the scabbard. This piece is unmarked by a specific manufacturer, but the style and construction are consistent with early to mid-20th century Western saddlery manufacturers such as Heiser or Keyston. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws regarding the purchase and use of accessories.
Condition: The scabbard is in well-used vintage condition. The heavy leather displays significant surface wear, deep creases, scuff marks, and darkening consistent with extensive field use and age. The stitching appears generally intact but shows wear, particularly along the edges. The leather is dry in several areas and would benefit from professional conditioning. The silver-tone metal hardware (buckles and D-rings) shows tarnishing, verdigris, and surface scratches consistent with use. The stylized engraving remains clearly visible.
