Description
This single-shot falling-block rifle is a Ballard-pattern design manufactured by the Hopkins & Allen Arms Company. The firearm is configured with a full-length octagonal barrel and a receiver featuring a saddle ring attached to the left side. The metal finish consists of a dark, even patina on the barrel, while the receiver, lever, and hammer exhibit a mottled gray and brown patina with visible surface oxidation and scattered light pitting. The rifle is stocked in wood with a checkered pistol-grip buttstock and a matching checkered forend, both of which show minor dings, scratches, and wear consistent with age. It is equipped with a fixed front blade sight, a rear buckhorn sight, and a folding tang peep sight mounted to the upper tang, which also shows additional mounting holes. Key markings on the top flat of the barrel are transcribed verbatim as THE HOPKINS & ALLEN ARMS CO. NORWICH. CONN. U.S.A. No caliber markings or serial numbers were observed during inspection. The action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The barrel retains a dark brown patina with some surface oxidation and minor handling marks. The receiver and lever have a mottled appearance with areas of light pitting and surface oxidation throughout. The wood components are structurally sound with well-defined checkering, showing scattered handling marks and small indentations typical of a firearm of this age. The bore was not inspected. The mechanical action appears functional, but the firearm is sold as a collectible and has not been tested for safety or firing.
