Description

Offered here is a Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action 2nd Model revolver, part of the company’s early top-break lineup produced in the late 19th century. Chambered in .38 S&W, this revolver represents the evolution of Smith & Wesson’s successful single-action, spur-trigger pocket revolvers that followed the earlier “Baby Russian” First Model variant. The 2nd Model is distinguished by the absence of the extended barrel lug found on the First Model, along with incremental refinements to the frame and latch system. It retains the classic top-break design with automatic extraction, a hallmark of Smith & Wesson engineering during this period, allowing for relatively quick reloading compared to contemporary solid-frame revolvers. The barrel is equipped with a fixed half-round front sight and an integrated rear notch on the barrel latch mechanism. The metal surfaces are finished in nickel plating, while the hammer displays some remaining case-hardened coloration. The grips are composed of checkered black hard rubber and feature the S&W logo medallions at the top of each panel. Key markings include the manufacturer and patent information stamped on the barrel rib: SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT’D JAN. 17 & 24 65 JULY 11. 65. AUG. 24. 69. JAN. 19. 1875. REISSUE JULY 25. 1871. The serial number 19769 is legibly stamped on the base of the grip frame and on the rear face of the cylinder. Although the caliber is not explicitly marked on the frame or barrel, the model is historically chambered in .38 S&W.
