Description
A German Gewehr 1888 bolt-action service rifle, commonly known as the Commission Rifle, manufactured at the Danzig Arsenal in 1891. The rifle is chambered for 7.92x57mm Mauser and features a characteristic full-length steel barrel shroud designed to protect the barrel from field damage. It is equipped with an internal five-round magazine intended for use with Mannlicher-style en-bloc clips. The firearm consists of a one-piece walnut stock with steel fittings, two sling swivels, and a cleaning rod. The receiver ring is centrally stamped with a Prussian crown above the manufacturer mark DANZIG and the date 1891. A single letter S is stamped above the crown, indicating the rifle was modified to accommodate the improved S Patrone spitzer ammunition. The receiver bridge is marked Gew. 88. in traditional Fraktur script. Serial number 9751 followed by a script f is visible on both the receiver and the barrel shroud. Numerous Imperial German proof marks, consisting of gothic letters under crowns, are present on the bolt, receiver, and magazine housing. The right side of the buttstock displays a hand-carved X mark with smaller characters inscribed within the quadrants.
Condition report:
The metal components exhibit a dark gray and brown patina throughout, with visible surface oxidation and light pitting on the bolt assembly, chamber, and magazine box. The barrel shroud shows minor handling dings and surface wear. The walnut stock is in original field condition, showing a variety of dings, scratches, and pressure marks consistent with military service. The bolt and trigger mechanisms are functional. The internal bore condition was not inspected.
