Description

A United States military M1910 T-handle entrenching tool, commonly referred to as a field shovel, manufactured by Ames for the US Army and USMC during World War II. This example features the standard fixed rounded steel blade and a wooden shaft ending in a T-shaped grip. The metal socket sleeve is stamped with the markings U S, AMES, and 1942. The construction consists of a socketed blade secured to the wood handle with metal rivets, and a T-handle reinforced with a metal strap. Remnants of the original olive drab paint finish are visible on the metal surfaces. This model was the primary entrenching tool for American ground forces until the introduction of the M1943 folding shovel.

Condition report:

The item is in field-used condition. Metal components retain approximately 30-40% of the original olive drab paint, with the remaining surfaces showing oxidation, surface rust, and pitting. The wooden shaft exhibits age-related darkening and multiple longitudinal cracks, particularly near the socket and the T-handle attachment points. The wooden T-handle remains intact and firmly attached to the shaft.
