Description

This German-made export Bowie-style knife or heavy-duty clearing tool was manufactured by the Victoria trade brand during the late 19th or early 20th century. The piece features a massive, broad forged steel blade with a pronounced clipped point and a heavy, straight spine. Designed for heavy chopping tasks, the single-edged blade has a wide belly and through-tang construction. The handle is composed of turned hardwood with an ergonomic swell, secured by a steel ferrule at the shoulder and a steel pommel cap at the terminal where the tang is peened. The steel ferrule is stamped with the word VICTORIA in an upward arc above a graphic depiction of a two-wheeled wagon, followed by the word GERMANY below. The face of the blade is marked with a small, deep square stamp containing a capital letter L.

Blade Length: 9.75 inches
Total Length: 15.5 inches.

Condition report:

The blade exhibits a heavy, dark brown oxidized patina across both faces with significant surface pitting consistent with age. The edge shows evidence of historical sharpening. The hardwood handle remains structurally sound and tight to the tang, showing minor surface dings, wear to the finish, and age-related drying. The steel ferrule and pommel cap exhibit a dark patina consistent with the blade surface.
