Lot 230:
Sold for: $225
Description
This is a British Pattern 1858 Naval sword bayonet and matching scabbard, designed for use with the Enfield short rifle. The bayonet features a steel recurved yataghan style blade with a single broad fuller on each side and a false edge near the point. The hilt is constructed with a brass crossguard and pommel. The crossguard is equipped with a muzzle ring and a recurved lower quillon ending in a circular finial. The pommel includes a spring-loaded press-stud and a long T-shaped slot for attachment to the rifle lug. The grips consist of two-piece black checkered leather or vulcanized rubber secured to the tang with rivets. The scabbard has a black leather body fitted with brass components, including a top locket with a round frog stud and a brass chape at the tip.
The obverse ricasso displays several visible stamps: a crown over WD (War Department) and a broad arrow (British military ownership mark). Located below these is a crown over E over 27, which is the inspection mark from the Enfield Small Arms Factory. The reverse ricasso bears a faint crown-over-letter inspection stamp.
Condition report:
The steel blade displays an aged dark gray patina with notable surface oxidation and scattered light pitting, primarily toward the point. The edge shows signs of period sharpening. The brass hilt components and scabbard fittings have developed a heavy dark mustard-colored patina with scattered minor dings and scratches. The grips show wear and smoothing to the checkering but remain intact. The leather scabbard body is complete but shows significant surface crazing and loss of the black finish. The brass chape has a small dent near the tip.
