Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 257:
Sold for: $50
Description
A single US Army leather holster designed for a large-frame revolver, typical of the equipment issued during the late 19th-century Indian Wars and Spanish-American War periods. The holster is constructed from heavy, dark brown leather and features a wide, integral belt loop. The front face of the holster body is embossed with a property mark consisting of the letters US within an oval frame. A distinguishing feature of this specimen is the attachment of a spiraled or braided leather lanyard cord, which is secured to a brass ring at the toe of the holster. This is an open-top holster pattern, lacking the traditional fold-over flap, which suggests it may be a specific cavalry variant or a period field modification intended for faster access to the sidearm.
Condition report:
The holster is in well-worn, relic condition. The leather exhibits significant surface crazing, deep cracking, and substantial loss of the original finish throughout. The material is currently stiff and appears fragile. All brass hardware, including the rivets and the lanyard ring, shows a heavy accumulation of green verdigris patina.
