Lot 260:
Sold for: $90
Description
This is a Swedish Model 1896 knife bayonet, designed for use with the 6.5mm m/1896 Mauser rifle. It features the distinctive all-steel construction characteristic of Swedish military production from this era. The double-edged blade is a dagger-style form with a central fuller, tapering to a sharp point. On the ricasso, the blade is struck with the Swedish military acceptance mark of a crown, positioned above the production number 335 and the stylized anchor maker’s mark for Eskilstuna Jernmanufaktur AB (EJAB). The hilt consists of a tubular steel grip with a fine diamond-pattern knurled surface for improved handling. It includes a steel crossguard with a muzzle ring and a pommel with a conical locking nut and a spring-loaded catch. The scabbard is constructed of steel with a teardrop-shaped finial at the tip and a rectangular stud for attachment to the frog. The included brown leather frog is a standard military issue type, featuring a retaining strap with a metal buckle to secure the hilt.
Condition report:
The bayonet is in good antique condition. The steel blade and hilt show light age-appropriate wear, including minor surface oxidation and scattered dark spotting. The knurling on the grip remains sharp and well-defined. The steel scabbard shows similar surface wear and some loss of original finish. The leather frog exhibits significant signs of age, including surface crazing and cracking, but the leather appears to remain reasonably supple and the stitching is intact.
