Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 274:
Sold for: $55
Description
This lot consists of 100 rounds of Greek military surplus 7.92x57mm Mauser ammunition, professionally packaged in five individual cardboard boxes containing 20 rounds each. The ammunition is the 7,9 sS (schweres Spitzgeschoß) variety, which utilizes a 198-grain heavy boat-tail spitzer bullet with a lead core and full metal jacket, manufactured to standard military specifications for use in Mauser-pattern rifles. Each tan cardboard box is printed within a black rectangular border with the markings 20, 7,9 sS, P.C.H., and 1940. The individual cartridges feature brass cases and primers sealed with a black lacquer ring. The headstamps on the cartridge bases bear the characters E, U, and K, signifying production by the Greek Powder and Cartridge Company (Poudrerie et Cartoucherie Hellénique, or Pyrkal) in Athens. Produced in 1940, this ammunition represents a significant historical artifact from the early period of World War II in the Mediterranean theater.
Condition report:
The ammunition is in good overall surplus condition for its age. The cardboard boxes exhibit typical age-related wear, including minor scuffing, light staining, and slight fraying at the edges and opening flaps, but remain intact and legible. The brass cartridge cases show a natural aged patina with occasional spots of light surface oxidation and minor verdigris. The bullets remain well-seated with minor surface oxidation consistent with long-term storage. The primers appear undisturbed with the black sealant intact. The ammunition is sold as a collectible item and has not been function-tested.
