Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 299:
Sold for: $50
Description
This lot consists of 2 WWII-era U.S. Army Carlisle Model first aid packets manufactured by Bauer & Black, a division of The Kendall Co., Chicago. These individual field dressings are housed in rectangular metal tins finished in olive drab green. The lids are embossed with the text First-Aid Packet, U.S. Gov’t., Carlisle Model, and opening instructions to pull the tape. They also specify that the red color indicates the back of the dressing. One tin remains closed, while the other is open and contains its original contents. The interior components include a sterile gauze bandage and a paper packet of sulfanilamide (sulfa) powder. The sulfanilamide packet features printed directions for wound treatment and a warning against using more than two packets per person. The inclusion of sulfa powder identifies these as mid-war production. These items were standard components of a soldier’s field equipment, designed to be carried in a small canvas pouch on the web belt.
Condition report:
The items are in mixed condition. One tin exhibits significant surface oxidation, heavy rust, and substantial paint loss on both the lid and sides. The second, opened tin is in better condition, retaining a high percentage of its original olive drab paint with scattered light scratches and wear along the edges. The interior of the open tin shows a clean copper-toned metal surface. The internal gauze dressing and paper sulfanilamide packet appear well-preserved with no signs of significant deterioration or moisture damage.
