Description

This is a United States Office of Civilian Defense (OCD) steel helmet from the World War II era. The helmet follows the shallow, wide-brimmed Brodie pattern, similar to the M1917A1 military combat helmet, but produced specifically for home-front defense. It is finished in a smooth black paint, a color designation typically used by air raid wardens or auxiliary police units. The interior features a multi-point suspension system constructed of tan canvas webbing. On the underside of the brim, the helmet is stamped with four lines of text: PROPERTY OF US OCD. This mark identifies the piece as official government property issued by the Office of Civilian Defense.

Condition report:

The helmet is in worn condition. The exterior black finish shows significant paint loss, particularly on the crown and edges, with visible surface oxidation and light pitting on the exposed steel. The interior webbing liner is intact but exhibits age-related discoloration, stiffness, and fraying. The original chin strap is missing, although the metal attachment loops remain present on the underside of the brim.
