Description
This Japanese Type 99 Arisaka bolt-action short rifle is chambered in 7.7x58mm and configured for military service. The rifle features a 26 inch barrel with a blued finish that shows significant thinning and transition to a dark brown patina, particularly on the bolt handle and trigger guard. The receiver is mounted in a full-length two-piece wood stock that exhibits numerous dings, scratches, and impressions typical of historical military use, and it is fitted with a cupped metal buttplate and side-mounted sling swivels. The sighting system consists of a hooded front blade and a folding rear ladder sight equipped with anti-aircraft wings. Key markings include the Japanese characters ??? transcribed as Type 99 on the receiver bridge, though the Imperial chrysanthemum has been ground off, leaving a visible horizontal scar. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the Series 4 mark followed by the serial number 72246 and the Nagoya Arsenal symbol. This example retains a monopod base on the middle band, though the monopod itself and the bolt dust cover are missing. A tan canvas web sling is currently attached. We have not function-tested this firearm. Note – All firearms require
Condition report:
The rifle is in fair to good military surplus condition. The metal finish shows thinning throughout with a brown patina and light oxidation on the bolt and trigger assembly. The bore is somewhat dark with visible rifling, consistent with surplus rifles of this era. The wood stock is sound but shows heavy handling wear including multiple dents, scratches, and field-use impressions. The action appears to function correctly but has not been live-fire tested. The Imperial chrysanthemum has been intentionally removed via grinding.
