Description

This is a two-piece walnut rifle stock set for a United States Model 1903 Springfield rifle, identified as the Scant C variation manufactured by Remington during World War II. The set consists of a main stock and a matching top handguard. The Scant C stock is a recognized wartime variation designed to conserve walnut by shaping a semi-pistol grip profile from wood blanks originally intended for straight-grip stocks. The forestock is equipped with two steel reinforcing crossbolts. Faint, illegible indentations are visible on the left side of the wrist area, consistent with the placement of military inspection cartouches, though no specific characters can be discerned. The set is composed entirely of walnut with a natural oil finish.

Condition report:

The walnut stock set exhibits an aged, dark brown patina consistent with its era. The wood surfaces show numerous small dings, scratches, and shallow abrasions from field use and long-term storage. No major cracks or structural failures are visible in the wood. The metal buttplate and reinforcing bolts show typical oxidation and wear. The blue tape is a temporary addition.
