Description

This Imperial German Model 1871/84 knife bayonet is accompanied by its original leather and brass scabbard. The straight, single-edged steel blade features a rounded tip and a deep fuller on both sides, retaining much of its original bright finish. The hilt includes a steel crossguard with a muzzle ring and a downward-curving hooked quillon. The handle is fitted with two dark-stained wooden grip scales secured by two steel rivets. The steel pommel contains a diagonal T-O attachment slot and a functional spring-loaded press-stud release. Markings include a Prussian Fraktur B inspection stamp on the blade spine and unit markings 2.R.8.105. on the crossguard, identifying the weapon to the 2nd Infantry Regiment, 8th Company. The scabbard has a black leather body with stitched rear seams and brass fittings at the locket and chape, each secured with small pins. The brass frog stud is stamped with the script character d followed by serial number 6625.

Condition report:

The blade is in overall good condition with minor graying and light surface oxidation consistent with age. The crossguard and pommel show an aged patina; the pommel has a noticeable patch of discoloration and surface pitting on one side. The wooden grip scales are intact, showing deep color and minor handling wear but no significant cracks. The leather scabbard body remains flexible with surface crazing, scuffing, and wear to the black finish throughout. Brass fittings have a natural golden-brown patina. The spring-loaded locking mechanism is functional and the bayonet fits securely in the scabbard.
