Lot 444:
Sold for: $275
Description
This unique firearm is a Springfield Model 1866 Second Allin Trapdoor breech-loading rifle that has been modified into a takedown toy or cadet rifle using genuine military components. Built around a Springfield Model 1863 percussion musket lock and a Model 1866 breech assembly, the rifle features a shortened two-band configuration with a barrel length of approximately 30 inches. The walnut stock has been custom-adapted with a takedown mechanism at the wrist, allowing the barrel and forend to separate from the buttstock and receiver. The metal surfaces display a dark, aged patina with significant scattered oxidation and pitting visible on the breech block, receiver, and lock plate. The walnut furniture shows various dings, scratches, and signs of heavy use, including a prominent crack on the right side extending forward from the lock plate area. Verbatim markings include 1863 and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD on the lock plate alongside a federal eagle symbol, while the breech block is stamped with the date 1866 above a small eagle head proof mark. The buttplate tang is marked U.S. and the rifle includes a metal ramrod stored beneath the barrel. We have not function-tested this firearm. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces exhibit a dark, untouched patina with significant surface oxidation and visible pitting, most notably on the breech, receiver, and hammer. The bore condition was not inspected but the external surfaces suggest age-related wear. The action, including the trapdoor breech and the custom takedown mechanism, appears to be mechanically functional though it has not been tested for firing. The walnut stock is in fair condition, showing numerous handling marks, abrasions, and a large structural crack on the right side of the forend. The ramrod is present and shows matching oxidation to the barrel.
