Description

A German-manufactured export bayonet, specifically the Portuguese Model 1904 pattern designed for the Mauser-Vergueiro rifle. The weapon features a long, straight, single-edged steel blade with a deep longitudinal fuller. The hilt construction consists of a steel crossguard with a distinctive hooked quillon and integrated muzzle ring, paired with a bird’s head style pommel featuring a mortise slot. The wood grip scales are secured by two steel rivets. The ricasso is stamped with a royal cipher beneath a crown, representing King Carlos I of Portugal. The side of the crossguard is stamped with the serial number 124220. The accompanying steel scabbard is stamped at the throat with the matching serial number 124220 and is completed with a ball finial.

Condition report:

The steel blade retains much of its original brightness but shows areas of surface oxidation and localized pitting, most notably toward the tip. The wood grip scales exhibit significant signs of service wear, including dark staining, bruising, and numerous small indentations. The metal components of the hilt and the scabbard have developed a dark, aged patina with mottled surface oxidation and light handling marks throughout. The scabbard remains structurally sound with the ball finial securely attached.
