Lot 474:
Sold for: $650
Description
This is a single-shot Martini-action cadet rifle manufactured by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) for the Commonwealth of Australia. Originally chambered in .310 Cadet, this specimen has been rechambered for the .32-20 Winchester cartridge, a common conversion for these rifles. The firearm features a small-frame falling block action and a barrel length of approximately 25 inches. Technical specifications include a full-length hardwood stock and handguard, a blade front sight, and an adjustable rear ladder sight. The metal retains a thinned blued finish with visible wear and areas of brown patina. Extensive markings are found throughout the piece: the right side of the receiver is stamped with the BSA stacked rifles logo and MADE BY THE BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO LTD. The left side of the receiver is marked COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA, N.S.W., and serial number 36918, alongside a broad arrow military proof and the digits 6.2.99. The barrel knoxform displays a kangaroo motif, the caliber designation 32-20, and original proof marks reading 4 .310 12-120. The buttstock features stamped unit and inventory markings including C.M.F., N S W, 16299, and a date of 8/11. The rifle is equipped with standard sling swivels on the mid-band and buttstock. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal finish exhibits significant thinning and transition to a brown patina, with light scattered surface oxidation and handling marks consistent with its age and military training history. The wood furniture is in good structural condition, showing numerous dings, scratches, and impressions from service but remaining free of major cracks or repairs. The bore is bright with sharp, well-defined rifling. The Martini falling block action appears to function correctly, providing a solid lockup.
