Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 483:
Sold for: $400
Description
This sporterized U.S. Model 1842 percussion musket is chambered in .69 caliber and features a shortened walnut forestock consistent with surplus military arms modified for civilian utility. The smoothbore barrel is secured by a single remaining iron barrel band, with the original forward and middle bands having been removed during sporterization. The iron lockplate exhibits a clearly visible stamp reading SPRINGFIELD over the date 1845 behind the hammer, with a central eagle motif over the letters US. The barrel tang is dated 1851, and the breech area displays the V P proof marks next to an eagle head symbol. The top tang of the buttplate is also stamped with US. This lot is missing its original ramrod and rear sight, though a simple blade front sight is affixed near the muzzle. The walnut stock is well-worn, exhibiting various dings and scratches throughout its dark aged finish. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metal components display a heavy and consistent dark brown patina with significant pitting and surface oxidation throughout the barrel, lock, and iron furniture. The smoothbore is dark with visible pitting. The walnut stock shows heavy field wear, including various dings, scratches, and a shortened forend, but it remains structurally sound. The hammer and trigger action appears to function correctly, locking into both half and full cock, though the firearm has not been function-tested for safety.
