Description

A Japanese Type 30 bayonet and matching scabbard, designed for the Arisaka rifle and produced during World War II. This example is a mid-to-late war production variant featuring a straight crossguard and a bird’s-head shaped pommel. The blade is constructed of steel with a single edge and a fuller, finished with a dark blueing. The hilt consists of two contoured wood grips attached to the tang via two slotted screws and nuts. The pommel incorporates a functional spring-loaded locking mechanism and a mounting slot for a bayonet lug. On the ricasso, the manufacturer’s mark is visible as a vertical oval containing three characters, identifying the maker as Toyoda Jido Shoki Seisakusho (Toyoda Automatic Loom Works) produced under the oversight of the Nagoya Arsenal. The set includes a sheet-steel scabbard featuring a ball-tip finial and a frog stud for belt attachment.

Condition report:

The bayonet and scabbard are in good overall condition. The blade retains a significant portion of its original dark blued finish, showing only minor surface wear and small areas of thinning near the tip. The wood grips are intact, displaying typical field wear such as small pressure dents and light scratches. The metal crossguard and pommel show finish thinning and a developing patina. The scabbard exhibits light surface oxidation, scratches, and finish wear commensurate with age and military service.
