Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 657:
Sold for: $425
Description
This is a Japanese Arisaka Type 99 bolt-action short rifle chambered in 7.7x58mm, a primary infantry weapon of the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. The rifle features a approximately 25.9 inch barrel equipped with a protected front post sight and a ladder-style rear sight, though the anti-aircraft wings are missing from the rear assembly. The receiver bridge is notably marked with an intact and deeply struck 16-petal Imperial Chrysanthemum above a single gas vent hole. The left side of the receiver rail is stamped with the Series 25 symbol followed by the serial number 47810 and the Kokura Arsenal symbol of three interlocking circles. The metal components retain a worn blued finish that shows significant thinning and patches of surface oxidation, particularly on the barrel and the heavily rusted steel buttplate. The two-piece reddish-brown wood stock shows numerous dings, scratches, and handling marks consistent with military field use. Other features include a plum-shaped bolt handle, a large knurled safety, a cleaning rod, and side-mounted sling swivels. The action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The rifle is in fair to good original condition. The blued finish shows significant thinning and wear throughout, with visible surface oxidation and freckling on the barrel and receiver. The steel buttplate exhibits heavy surface rust and oxidation. The two-piece wood stock is structurally sound but displays numerous dings, compressions, and scratches from service. The rear sight is missing its anti-aircraft wings. The bore was not inspected. The bolt and safety appear to operate normally.
