Description

This Springfield Armory Model 1898 bolt action rifle is chambered in .30-40 Krag and has been configured into a civilian sporter. The rifle features a round barrel fitted with a Pacific brand ramped front blade sight and a Redfield receiver-mounted aperture peep sight. The metalwork on the barrel displays a deep, modern blued finish while the receiver and magazine box exhibit a mottled grayish-brown patina consistent with historical age and use. The walnut stock has been professionally sporterized with a shortened forend and one barrel band, yet it retains significant military markings including a well-defined inspector’s cartouche on the left side of the wrist reading JSA / 1900 and a circled P proof on the underside. The furniture is completed with a steel military-style buttplate featuring a hinged trapdoor. Key markings on the left side of the receiver include U.S., MODEL 1898., SPRINGFIELD ARMORY., and the serial number 263587. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.

Condition report:

The barrel retains approximately 90% of its later blued finish with only minor surface scuffing and handling marks. The receiver and side-loading magazine assembly show a thinned, darkened patina with areas of silvering on high edges and some light operational wear. The walnut stock remains in good condition as modified, exhibiting various small dings, scratches, and a small wood repair plug on the right side of the butt. The action appears to function correctly, though the firearm has not been function-tested. The bore was not inspected but the exterior indicates a well-maintained piece.
