Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 673:
Sold for: $450
Description
This lot features one hermetically sealed metal ammunition container, commonly referred to as a spam can, produced by the Greek Powder and Cartridge Company (Pyrkal). The container contains 192 rounds of .30 caliber ball M2 ammunition, which corresponds to the .30-06 Springfield cartridge. This specific configuration is designed for use in the M1 Garand rifle, with cartridges pre-loaded into eight-round clips and organized within cloth bandoleers. The exterior of the metal can is finished in an olive drab green paint with yellow stenciled text. Verbatim markings on the front of the can include: DO NOT USE AS FOOD CONTAINER / 192 CARTRIDGES / CAL .30 BALL M2 / 8 RD CLIPS / BANDOLEERS / LOT HXP 4044-72. The HXP lot prefix identifies the Greek manufacture, while the number 72 indicates the year of production as 1972. The top of the container is equipped with a large wire folding carry handle and a factory-attached metal T-handle opening key.
Condition report:
The ammunition container is in its original factory-sealed condition, ensuring the internal components have been preserved from moisture and oxidation. The exterior olive drab finish is largely intact, exhibiting minor surface scuffs, light scratches, and small areas of finish wear consistent with transit and long-term storage in a military environment. The stenciled yellow markings are clear and fully legible. There are no significant dents, punctures, or signs of heavy corrosion on the metal surface. The opening key and carry handle remain securely attached. Because the container is unopened, the internal brass cases and projectiles are expected to be in clean, functional condition.
