Description

This lot features a sporterized Winchester U.S. Model of 1917 bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield, originally produced for the First World War. The rifle is equipped with a 26-inch barrel that retains its original military-pattern front sight and protected rear aperture sight. The metal components exhibit a blued finish showing characteristic wear and thinning from field use. The wooden stock has been modified into a sporterized configuration with a shortened forend and the removal of the original handguards. The left side of the buttstock displays a hand-carved animal head motif, and the rear is fitted with an aftermarket Red Head Brand Chicago rubber recoil pad. Verbatim markings on the receiver ring include U.S. / MODEL OF 1917 / WINCHESTER positioned above the serial number 78975. The barrel is marked near the muzzle with a W for Winchester, an ordnance flaming bomb proof, and a production date of 12-17. The rifle includes an internal box magazine and is fitted with front and rear sling swivels. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.

Condition report:

The blued finish shows moderate wear and thinning, particularly on high contact points, with scattered light surface oxidation and handling marks present. The bore was not inspected. The bolt action appears to function correctly, though the firearm has not been function-tested for safety or live-fire. The sporterized stock shows significant modification from its original military form, displaying various scratches, dings, and small compressions consistent with age and use. The aftermarket rubber recoil pad shows hardening and surface cracking due to age.
