Description
This is a Portuguese Kropatschek Model 1886 bolt action infantry rifle manufactured by the Oesterreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft in Steyr, Austria. Chambered in the 8mm Portuguese Kropatschek cartridge, this design features a tubular magazine located beneath the barrel, a full-length wood stock, and a long-pattern barrel. The receiver is finished in a dark patina and is prominently marked on the left side with OE.W.G. STEYR over 1886. The right side of the receiver bears the model designation M.1886. A significant property mark consisting of a crown over L.I degree, representing King Luiz I of Portugal, is stamped on the left receiver wall. The serial number U 518 is present on the receiver and the ladder-style rear sight base. The bolt assembly is mismatched to the receiver, displaying the numbers 00754 and KK702 on various components. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight, a bayonet lug, a cleaning rod, and two sling swivels. The full-length wood stock displays a distinct tiger-stripe grain pattern and shows handling wear consistent with military service. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces retain a worn blued finish that has largely transitioned into a dark, even patina with scattered areas of surface oxidation and silvering on the high edges. The markings remain clear and legible. The bore was not inspected but the action appears to function correctly, though it has not been live-fire tested. The wood stock is in good overall condition with no visible cracks, exhibiting numerous handling marks, dings, and scratches appropriate for its age and history. The tiger-stripe figuring is well-defined under a darkened oil finish. All major components, including the sights and cleaning rod, are present.
