Description
A British Royal Artillery officers sword, Pattern 1821, dating to the reign of King George VI. The sword features a slightly curved, single-edged polished steel blade with a spear point and a single 23-inch fuller. The blade is elaborately etched with military and royal motifs, including the royal cypher consisting of the letters G and R entwined around the Roman numerals VI, surmounted by a Tudor crown. The etching also includes laurel wreaths, acanthus scrolls, and floral patterns. The ricasso displays an etched six-pointed star with a central circular brass Proved inset. The blade spine is marked MADE IN ENGLAND. The hilt consists of a three-branch guard made of nickel-plated steel. The grip is covered in black shagreen and bound with triple-strand twisted wire. The steel backstrap is checkered near the pommel for increased grip. The sword is housed in a brown leather-covered field service scabbard, complete with its original leather frog and suspension straps. This lot includes printed documentation from previous auction listings identifying the item as a British Pattern 1821 or 1822 Artillery officers sword.
Blade Length: 33.5 inches
Total Length: 40.25 inches.
Condition report:
The blade remains in very good condition, staying bright with crisp and well-defined etching. Minor surface scratches and very light spots of oxidation are visible near the tip. The hilt shows moderate surface oxidation, pitting, and loss of the original plating throughout the guard and pommel. The shagreen grip and wire binding are secure and intact. The leather scabbard shows significant age-related wear, with extensive peeling and loss of the finished top layer. The suspension straps are present but show heavy wear and fragility.
