Description
The Lyman Ideal No. 55 is a vintage bench-mounted powder measure designed for the precise volumetric dispensing of various smokeless gunpowders for firearm reloading. The unit features a sturdy orange-enameled cast metal body with an integrated adjustable bench clamp and a manual operating handle that rotates an internal metering cylinder. The cylinder is equipped with adjustable slides to control the volume of the powder charge. Mounted atop the body is a clear plastic reservoir tube with a black friction-fit lid. This lot includes the powder measure, two interchangeable blackened steel drop tubes, the original illustrated factory box, and an instructional pamphlet dated 1961. Key markings include the model designation LYMAN-IDEAL NO. 55 POWDER MEASURE cast into the body and printed on the reservoir band. The box is clearly marked THE LYMAN GUN SIGHT CORP. MIDDLEFIELD, CONN., U.S.A. and POWDER MEASURE No. 55. The manual carries the notation Form LM-51 6-61 5M PRINTED IN U.S.A. Condition report:
The cast metal body retains a high percentage of its original orange finish, with minor chips and surface wear noted primarily on high edges and the clamp mechanism. The clear plastic reservoir has developed a distinct yellow-brown discoloration consistent with age and previous exposure to nitrate-based powders, but it remains free of cracks. The internal metering components and adjustment screws move freely, and the operating handle functions smoothly. The drop tubes show light surface wear to their blackened finish. The original box exhibits moderate shelf wear, including corner scuffing, minor edge tears, and some light staining, but the graphics remain clear and legible. The manual shows creasing and light toning.
