Description
This lot consists of three vintage ammunition boxes totaling 60 live rounds and 50 blank cartridges. Included is a green and buff two-piece box from the Western Cartridge Company of East Alton, Illinois, containing 10 .38-40 Winchester Soft Point cartridges with brass cases and copper-jacketed bullets. The second is a red Winchester Repeating Arms Co. box for .38 Short Colt Smokeless cartridges containing 50 rounds with 130-grain lead bullets. The third is a factory sealed box from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company containing 50 .38 Caliber Short Rim Fire blank cartridges labeled as Extra Loud. Verbatim markings on the Western box include 50 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES, .38 CALIBER SMOKELESS, and MANUFACTURED BY WESTERN CARTRIDGE COMPANY. The Winchester red box is labeled 50 WINCHESTER .38 Short Colt Smokeless and Adapted to Colt Revolvers. The blank box is marked 50 WINCHESTER BLANK CARTRIDGES, Extra Loud, .38 Caliber Short Rim Fire, and Winchester Repeating Arms Company, New Haven, Conn., U. S. A.
Condition report:
All packaging exhibits age-appropriate shelf wear, staining, and fraying at the corners. The Western box lid is detached and has previous tape repairs. The .38-40 Winchester rounds show mild surface oxidation on the cases and jackets. The .38 Short Colt cartridges show heavy white lead oxidation on the bullets and tarnish on the brass cases, with headstamps marked W. R. A. CO. .38 S. C. The tan box of blank cartridges remains factory sealed and shows moderate staining and edge wear.
