Description
This Savage Model 1903 is a pump-action, takedown rifle chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle rimfire cartridges. The firearm features an octagonal barrel and a distinctive detachable box magazine, representing one of the earliest designs of its type from Savage Arms. The rifle is constructed with a smooth walnut buttstock featuring a crescent metal buttplate and a grooved wooden slide forend. Sights consist of a fixed front blade and an adjustable rear leaf sight. The takedown mechanism is operated via a large knurled screw on the right side of the receiver. Prominent barrel markings include the manufacturer address MANUFACTURED BY THE / SAVAGE ARMS CO. UTICA. NEW YORK. U.S.A. and the caliber designation 22 S., L & L.R. The single detachable magazine is marked 22 S. L & L.R. and SAVAGE ARMS COMPANY. The serial number 34.583 is stamped on the lower tang. The receiver and barrel exhibit a dark gray-brown patina consistent with age and field use. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The original blued finish has largely faded to a dark gray and plum-brown patina across the receiver and barrel, with scattered areas of minor surface oxidation, thinning, and spotting. The walnut furniture shows moderate wear with numerous scattered dings, scratches, and minor compressions, though it remains structurally sound with no visible cracks. The crescent buttplate has surface oxidation and light pitting. The action appears to function correctly when cycled, though it has not been function-tested with live ammunition. The markings remain clear and legible.
