Description
This lot features a collection of 26 live rounds and 20 empty brass casings in .38-55 Winchester caliber, accompanied by three original vintage cardboard ammunition boxes. The assortment includes a green Union Metallic Cartridge Company box marked TWENTY .38-55 SMOKELESS CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES MANUFACTURED BY The Union Metallic Cartridge Company, containing seven mixed cartridges. Also present is a blue, red, and white Winchester STAYNLESS box for 20 CARTRIDGES .38-55 WINCHESTER SOFT POINT, and a tan Winchester box with a printed instructional label stating In RELOADING these CARTRIDGES The only PRIMER that can be used IS THE WINCHESTER PRIMER No. 2 1/2. Headstamps across the collection include W.R.A. CO. 38-55 for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, U.M.C. 38-55 for the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, and W 38-55 WIN. Notably, one cartridge in the lot is headstamped W.R.A. Co. 32-40. The live ammunition includes a mix of projectile types such as lead round nose and jacketed soft point bullets.
Condition report:
The brass cartridge cases and live rounds exhibit varying degrees of age-related tarnish, surface oxidation, and verdigris typical for vintage ammunition. The cardboard boxes show significant wear, including fraying at the corners, shelf wear, staining, and minor tearing. The green U.M.C. box lid is partially separated and shows substantial edge wear, while the STAYNLESS box retains much of its original color despite surface abrasions. All ammunition is sold as a collectible; the functionality of the primers and propellant is unknown and has not been tested.
