Description
This is a single-shot, breech-loading Springfield Model 1866 rifle, representing the second Allin conversion of Civil War era muskets, chambered in .50-70 Government. The firearm features a barrel secured by a single iron barrel band, indicating the stock and barrel may have been shortened from the original military configuration. The iron components display a dark, uniform oxidized patina with areas of surface pitting. The walnut stock features a straight wrist and a faint rectangular inspector’s cartouche on the left side. Key markings include the lock plate stamped with an eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD, alongside a partial date that appears to be 1864. The breech block is stamped with the date 1866 over a small eagle head mark, and the top of the breech block is marked with the number 141. The buttplate tang is stamped U.S. and the rifle is fitted with a front blade sight and a rear flip-up leaf sight. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metalwork exhibits a heavy dark patina with significant surface oxidation and scattered pitting throughout the barrel and receiver. The wooden stock shows numerous dings, bruises, and scratches consistent with age, including a prominent horizontal scratch on the left side of the buttstock. The bore condition was not inspected. The breech-loading action appears to function, though it has not been mechanically tested for safety or live-fire. The stock shows evidence of shortening, and the single barrel band is secure.
