Description
This Smith & Wesson J frame Chiefs Special (later became the Model 36) double action/single action revolver is chambered in .38 Special and configured as a snub-nose with a barrel length of approximately 2 inches. The firearm features a blued carbon steel frame and a fluted six-shot cylinder. It is fitted with checkered walnut target-style grips and features fixed iron sights, including a serrated ramp front sight with a red insert and a square-notch rear sight. Key markings include the manufacturer name on the left side of the barrel, and 38 S. & W. SPL. on the right. The right side of the frame displays the four-line manufacturer address: MADE IN U.S.A., MARCAS REGISTRADAS, SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS. The Smith & Wesson trade mark logo is stamped on the left side of the frame. Inside the crane, the assembly number 17793 is visible, and the serial number 40974 is located on the bottom of the grip frame. The revolver is accompanied by a brown leather Hunter brand holster with a retention strap and dual silver-toned snaps. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The blued finish exhibits significant wear and thinning throughout, including a prominent drag line on the cylinder and silvering at the muzzle and on the high edges of the frame. The bore is bright with crisp rifling. The mechanical action appears to function correctly in both single and double action modes. The wood target grips show handling marks and moderate wear to the checkering but are free of cracks. The leather holster is in used condition with surface scuffs and age-related wear but remains fully functional.
