Description
This Belgian-made side-by-side break-action hammer shotgun is chambered in 20 gauge, as indicated by the 16.0 bore and 63 chamber markings on the barrel flats. The firearm features approximately 30-inch barrels displaying a prominent Damascus pattern finish and a smooth concave top rib. The lock plates are decorated with fine scroll engraving and are verbatim marked BARTLETT & Co. The receiver, hammers, and trigger guard also exhibit extensive scroll and floral engraving patterns throughout. The walnut stock is a notable feature, displaying an attractive relief-carved stag head on the right side of the butt, complemented by shell-pattern checkering at the wrist and matching carved floral motifs on the forend. Mechanical features include external hammers and double triggers. Key markings include the serial number 138717 and the letter B over 6 on the water table, while the top rib is explicitly marked BELGIUM FINE DAMASCUS FINISH. The barrel flats display various Belgian proof house markings consistent with late 19th-century production. Condition report:
The shotgun is in fair to good overall condition. The barrel finish shows significant thinning and a light brownish patina consistent with age, although the Damascus pattern remains clearly visible. The receiver and lock plates retain some original dark finish with silvering on the high edges and areas of contact. There is visible oxidation present on the hammers, internal action components, and triggers. The bores are dark and show evidence of light pitting throughout. The action appears to function correctly, and the barrels lock up reasonably tight. The walnut furniture remains solid with numerous scattered handling marks, dings, and scratches, though the carved decorative elements remain well-defined.
