Description
This lot consists of 50 cartridges of .22 Short Rim Fire ammunition manufactured by The Clinton Cartridge Co. of Chicago, Illinois, originally sold in a vintage two-piece cardboard box. The cartridges are loaded with Lesmok powder, a semi-smokeless propellant composed of a mixture of black powder and nitrocellulose. The box features an orange-red top label with a distinctive black diamond logo containing the Clinton name in yellow text. Key markings on the box include THE CLINTON CARTRIDGE CO. CHICAGO, ILL. and 22 SHORT RIM FIRE LESMOK POWDER CARTRIDGES. The end labels are green with yellow text repeating the caliber and powder specifications. One side of the box base bears a faint red ink stamp reading C S 2 D W P. The partial label on the bottom panel guarantees performance and lists recommended firearms of the period, specifically mentioning Meriden, Stevens, Remington, and Marlin. The cartridges themselves feature copper cases and round-nose lead bullets.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box is in fair to good condition, showing moderate to heavy wear consistent with age, including edge rubbing, corner softening, and significant paper loss on the bottom panel. The cartridges appear live, though many of the copper cases exhibit visible green oxidation known as verdigris along with surface wear and darkening. The lead bullets show some dulling and minor surface oxidation.
