Description
This is an antique clip-point fighting knife and coordinating scabbard, showing design characteristics consistent with theater-made or private purchase combat knives of the late 19th to early 20th century. The knife is built with a heavy-gauge, single-edged steel blade featuring a clipped point and shallow rectangular bar fullers on both faces. No maker marks, manufacturer names, or military ordnance stamps are discernible on the ricasso or blade flats. The weapon utilizes a full-tang construction with two dark-stained hardwood grip scales, likely walnut, secured to the tang by two large steel rivets. The crossguard consists of a simple, oval-shaped steel plate. The accompanying scabbard is made of heavy-weight leather with thick perimeter stitching and a metal snap-fastener on the hilt-retaining strap. The construction of the scabbard suggests a custom or contemporary field-made modification.
Condition report:
The knife and scabbard are in fair antique condition. The blade exhibits extensive surface oxidation and pitting throughout, along with evidence of past sharpening. The hardwood grip scales are well-preserved with a deep patina and scattered minor surface dings. The leather scabbard shows significant age-related wear, surface cracking, and a heavy dark patina, though the structural stitching remains mostly intact and functional. The metal snap fastener on the strap shows oxidation and verdigris.
