Description
This lot consists of 100 rounds of .38-40 Winchester caliber ammunition intended for use in cowboy action shooting. The collection includes two boxes of centerfire cartridges. One box is from the Cowboy Cartridge Co. and is labeled for 50 cartridges with 180-grain cast bullets using a black powder substitute. The second box is from HSM (The Hunting Shack, Inc.) and is labeled as Cowboy Action Cartridges containing 180-grain lead round nose flat point bullets. This HSM box features a handwritten label suggesting the contents are reloaded components consisting of a 180-grain LRNFP bullet over 5 grains of Trail Boss powder with Winchester Large Pistol primers. Technical inspection of the individual cartridges shows brass cases with headstamps transcribed verbatim as star 38-40 star indicating the use of Starline brass. The cartridges are loaded with lead round nose flat point bullets and silver-tone primers. The ammunition is housed in a black plastic tray and a white styrofoam tray within their respective original manufacturer packaging.
Condition report:
The ammunition and packaging are in good overall condition. The brass cases are clean and bright with minimal signs of tarnishing or oxidation. The lead bullets appear well-formed and securely seated in the cases. The primers are properly seated and show no signs of corrosion. The outer boxes exhibit moderate shelf wear including surface abrasions, corner dings, and some tearing on the HSM box. As the handwritten notes on the HSM box indicate these are hand-loaded reloads, they should be inspected by a qualified professional before use. We have not function-tested this ammunition.
