Description
This is a single L.C. Smith hammerless side-by-side shotgun chambered in 12 gauge, configured as a traditional break-action sporting arm. The firearm features Damascus steel barrels with a visible twist pattern and a textured, concave sighting rib equipped with a single brass front bead. The receiver and sideplates exhibit a silver-gray patina with faint traces of original case hardening colors in protected areas. Key markings include the manufacturer name L.C. SMITH engraved on the sideplates, while the water table is stamped with the serial number 310122 and patent dates transcribed as PATD OCT. 5-86 and PATD JULY 13-86. The firearm is mounted with a highly figured tiger stripe walnut pistol-grip stock featuring fine checkering and a matching splinter forend. The furniture is finished with a black, horizontally-ribbed hard rubber buttplate. Overall, the piece shows characteristic wear for a late 19th-century field gun, including light surface peppering on the steel and various handling marks on the wood. Condition report:
The metal surfaces show a well-aged silver-gray patina, with the Damascus barrel pattern remaining distinct throughout. Traces of case color are visible on the receiver flats. There is light surface peppering and minor oxidation present on the barrels and receiver. The bore is relatively bright with some light frosting and minor spots of pitting toward the muzzles. The action appears to lock up tight and the triggers function as intended, though the firearm has not been live-fire tested. The walnut stock and forend are in very good condition with attractive figure, showing typical dings, scratches, and minor thinning of the checkering consistent with field use.
