Description
This 1884 photomechanical print, titled Union Commanders, depicts President Abraham Lincoln seated amongst a group of prominent Union military and naval leaders from the American Civil War. The individuals are identified by name at the bottom of the image as Admiral David Farragut, General William T. Sherman, General George H. Thomas, General George Meade, Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant, General Joseph Hooker, General Philip Sheridan, and General Winfield Scott Hancock. The scene is an elaborate composite montage featuring architectural elements and peripheral vignettes including the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and various naval and military scenes. A portrait of General Winfield Scott is visible in a frame in the background. Printed text along the lower edge reads COPYRIGHTED BY THE NOTMAN PHOTO CO. LIMITED BOSTON MASS. 1884 and WITH COMPLIMENTS OF THE TRAVELERS INSURANCE COMPANY. The print is presented in a gold-toned wooden frame. The reverse of the frame is heavily taped with silver duct tape and retains a hanging wire and an inventory tag marked 4532Z.
Condition report:
The print exhibits overall age-toning and scattered minor foxing throughout the paper. The wooden frame shows significant wear, including chipping to the gold finish and abrasions along the edges and corners. The back of the frame is heavily secured with silver duct tape.
