Description
This vintage hen mallard duck decoy was manufactured by the Animal Trap Company of America (ATCO) in Lititz, Pennsylvania. It is constructed from a molded composition or wood fiber material featuring a distinctive textured surface intended to reduce glare. The decoy is hand-painted with mottled brown and black plumage, a dark blue speculum bordered by white bars on the wings, and a reddish-brown bill. It features inset amber glass eyes. The underside of the decoy is marked with incised characters D3, ATCO, LITITZ, PA. A black metal screw-eye for a decoy line is attached to the base.
Condition report:
The decoy shows moderate to heavy wear consistent with age and field use. There is widespread paint loss, surface abrasions, and scattered staining. Significant chipping and material loss are visible on the tail and the tip of the bill. There is a visible horizontal crack around the neck joint and fine crazing/cracking in the composition material across the body.
