Description
A collection of three powder flasks dating to the mid-19th century, typical of the equipment used during the American Civil War era for muzzle-loading firearms.
The first flask is constructed of copper with a teardrop shape and features a prominent embossed relief of a patriotic Stand of Arms motif. This military trophy design includes crossed rifles positioned above two draped flags with star patterns, centered over a field cannon with stacked cannonballs. The flask is fitted with a brass collar and an adjustable graduated measuring spout.
The second flask is made of a zinc-based white metal alloy and features a classic fluted or scalloped shell pattern. It includes two small brass suspension rings on the sides for a carrying cord and a brass charger assembly with an external spring-actuated lever.
The third flask is a rectangular pocket-style vessel with rounded shoulders and a hammered texture on both faces. It is fitted with a simple rounded brass cap and spout.
No maker marks, signatures, or patent dates are visible on the brass collars or spouts of these items.
Condition report:
The flasks are in good antique condition, showing wear consistent with age and field use. The copper flask exhibits a deep, aged patina with areas of iridescent oxidation and minor surface dings. The white metal flask shows characteristic surface oxidation and remains structurally sound; the spring lever is present but functionality is not tested. The hammered metal flask shows significant surface tarnish and loss of original finish or plating. All three items exhibit minor surface scratches and small indentations.
