Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 139:
Sold for: $110
Description
This lot consists of 10 rounds of 18.5mm flechette ammunition manufactured by the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation under the Western Cartridge Company brand, consistent with Vietnam War era military specifications for close-quarters combat. The 18.5mm metric designation corresponds to standard 12 gauge shotgun shells, specifically configured with multiple fin-stabilized steel flechette projectiles intended for use in cylinder bore shotguns. The ammunition is contained within a plain brown cardboard box featuring a white printed label and is protected by a clear plastic shrink-wrap seal. Verbatim markings on the label include 10 CTGS., 18.5MM FLECHETTE, PLASTIC CASE, FIRE IN CYLINDER BORE GUNS ONLY, and LOT WCC. A secondary grey ink stamp reading 002 – 1700 is applied over the center of the label, and the lower border identifies the manufacturer as OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. A small white sticker with the handwritten number 36604 is present in the upper-left corner of the box. The individual rounds, which the label specifies as having plastic cases, have not been removed or inspected to maintain the integrity of the packaging seal.
Condition report:
The external cardboard box is in very good condition, showing only minor shelf wear and light corner softening beneath a tight and intact clear plastic shrink-wrap seal. The white label is clean, bright, and fully legible with no evidence of moisture damage or significant fading. As the package remains sealed, the internal cartridges have not been examined for potential brass corrosion or plastic degradation, though the exterior of the box suggests well-preserved storage conditions. The ammunition appears to be in its original factory-packaged state.
