Description
This lot consists of 50 rounds of .38 S&W caliber central-fire ammunition manufactured by The Union Metallic Cartridge Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The cartridges are chambered in .38 S&W and feature brass cases fitted with 146-grain round-nose lead bullets. According to the top label, the load contains 15 grains of powder. The ammunition is housed in a two-piece cardboard box featuring a top label with the U.M.C. trademark and detailed loading specifications. Verbatim markings on the top label include 50 .38 CAL. S & W. CENTRAL-FIRE CARTRIDGES, TRADE U.M.C. MARK, 15 GRS POWDER, 146 GRS BULLET, and MANUFACTURED BY THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE Co BRIDGEPORT, CONN., U.S.A. The cartridges feature mixed headstamps including U.M.C. 38 S&W and REM-UMC 38 S&W, suggesting the lot dates to the period surrounding the 1912 merger of Remington and the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box is in fair to good condition, exhibiting significant dark staining, surface wear, and fraying at the corners and edges consistent with long-term storage. The top and bottom labels remain legible despite the staining. The cartridges themselves show a natural aged patina to the brass cases with some scattered oxidation. The lead bullets exhibit a visible layer of white oxidation typical for lead of this age. The cartridges appear to be live and original, though they are sold for collectible purposes only and have not been tested for modern functionality.
