Description
This is a single-shot tip-up pocket pistol manufactured by J. Stevens & Co., chambered in .22 caliber, most likely .22 Short rimfire. The firearm features a 3.5 inch half-octagonal to round barrel that tips upward for loading when the side-mounted release is engaged. The frame and barrel are finished in nickel plating, though significant wear is present. It is equipped with a single-action hammer-fired mechanism and a traditional spur trigger. The furniture consists of two-piece smooth wood grips in a bird’s head configuration, secured by a single screw with a brass escutcheon. Sighting is achieved via a simple blade front sight and a rear notch integrated into the barrel latch. The top of the barrel is marked with a verbatim transcription reading J STEVENS & CO / CHICOPEE FALLS MASS U.S.A. PAT SEPT 6 864. This model represents a popular late 19th-century personal defense firearm known for its compact size and simple operation. Condition report:
The nickel-plated finish exhibits heavy wear across both the barrel and frame, characterized by significant peeling, surface oxidation, and patches of pitting. The metal shows various small dings and scratches consistent with age and use. The wood grips remain in good condition with scattered light handling marks and minor indentations but no visible cracks. The action appears to function correctly with the hammer holding at full cock and releasing when the spur trigger is depressed, though the firearm has not been function-tested with live ammunition. The bore condition was not observed but is likely consistent with the exterior surface wear.
